I had no problem with the Obama's date night in New York last month, even during a major recession with more bad economic news due the following Monday. It's not a bad thing for the president to go to the theater. Culture is good. And I think it's fine that Michelle and the girls joined the president in Europe last week. Indeed, it is reassuring to know that the first lady cares so deeply about the sacrifices of a previous generation of heroic Americans that she would attend commemorations at Normandy and show such interest and respect. Indeed, I think this picture demonstrates how moved she was.Click on the picture to see Michelle looking impatient or angry or something. What a juvenile argument. As anyone who has said "Cheese!" once or twice in their lifetime knows very well, snapshots of anyone's face can be deceiving. If you took a frame by frame photo sequence of a person in the midst of, say, the bar exam, you could certainly find one in which they were gazing into the distance much as an 8-year-old girl thinking about unicorns would do. Or take wedding pictures: over the course of several dozen snaps, there's always a few shots that make the happy bride and groom look like they were on their way into the dentist's office for a root canal. What can we discern about the mental state of the subjects in such photos? Nothing.
