Something to Look Forward To...Maybe
It's been a bit of a dry spell for Mexican cinema over the past couple of years, at least compared to the early part of this decade. Although the reception at Cannes to Alejandro González Iñárritu's new picture gives hope: the audience gave it a nine-minute ovation. Then again, I think they had a similar reaction to Fahrenheit 9-11, which undermines the confidence ever-so-slightly. In any event, since the protagonist is a man who's about to die, I think it's fair to say that this isn't going to be the movie that moves Mexican filmmakers away from their obsession with all things grim and gloomy.
