Abstention Predictions

Analysts predict that between 30 and 50 percent of the eligible population in Mexico will vote in July. The article names violence as a reason why, which is a bit odd because organized crime hasn't shown as much interest in interrupting the democratic process as it has in corrupting it (although a couple of bodies were tossed near a voting booth here in Torreón last year, so election-day violence is not entirely unheard of). Obviously, that's a big range, but given recent rates of abstention, 30 percent is probably closer to the mark, which is unfortunate.
