The PRD's Congress

Of course, the internal problems in the party were not resolved by this weekend's congress, but one potentially significant accomplishment is the agreement that the PRD candidate will be chosen by an internal election. Of course, if AMLO runs under the PT/Convergencia banner despite losing the PRD primary, the practical value of the above agreement will be nil, at least in the near term.

Bajo Reserva focuses its commentary on another dispute for the party:
The objective of the PRD was to reconcile positions, ideals, goals, and even interests, and that is exactly why the attributed so much importance to the twelfth National Congress of the PRD, which concludes today in Oaxtepec. But with the mere mention of alliances and the supposed purpose of refoundation of the party practically plummeted. René Arce dared to mention the PAN and the PRD as possible partners in future electoral processes, and the screaming not only from the leaders but also from the masses was unleashed without control. From Coatepec, Veracruz, Andrés Manuel López Obrador raised his voice and rejected any attempt at alliance of the PRD with the two parties, under the argument that they represent the oligarchy that stole the presidency from him in 2006. His spokesman in San Lázaro, the PRD deputy Alejandro Encinas, came out along the same lines and the attempt absurd and unhinged. The national leader of the PRD, Jesús Ortega, leapt out in opposition, saying that the alliances are formed when necessary and not only with the PT and Convergencia --political forces that the Tabascan does approve of-- but also the PAN and the PRI. What's more, he said that the policy of alliances should be determined by the specific situation under which each of the entities of the country lives.
