Meeting Expectations

The first leg of the Mexican finals lived up to expectations, with Monterrey coming back from a two-goal deficit to take the 4-3 global lead. Chupete Suazo came through with two goals for the winners. People in Torreón all seem to feel like they should root for Monterrey, what with a team from the North facing off against a Mexico City squad. However, most of them can't bring themselves to do so, a bit like how I could never root for Spurrier in bowl games even if it made the SEC look better.

Following the third Monterrey goal (two minutes in), Enrique Bermudez offers a great goal call with, ¡Gooooooooooooooollllll! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! ¡Santana! Gooooooooooooooollllll! I remember reading an American journalist ripping the standard Spanish-language ¡Gooooool! before the last World Cup (I believe), arguing that it was tired and uncreative. ¡Qué idiotez! What it lacks in originality, it more than makes up for in raw emotion.
