Lack of Trust
This weekend, Televisa broadcast its annual fundraiser Teletón, which focuses on providing health care to poor Mexican children. That's certainly a good cause, but the event has drawn a lot of criticism for its schmaltzy, borderline exploitative interactions between TV stars and sick children, as well the uncanny ability for the Teletón to just barely reach its pre-determined goal, and only in the final portions of the broadcast. (This year was, despite the economy, no exception.) The end result is that a majority of Mexicans seem down on the nation's most prominent philanthropy event: according to an Imagen poll from last week, 60 percent don't believe in Teletón.
