"The Zetas, by far, remain the biggest threat to Mexican security," said another U.S. law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity. That was certainly not the message two months ago, when Eric Holder was bragging up the arrests of hundreds of La Familia henchmen:
For those of you who aren’t familiar with La Familia, it is the newest and most violent of the five Mexican drug cartels.
Or from May, when Holder's former counterpart in Mexico said that the Family was Mexico's most dangerous gang.
I don't think anyone is wrong here; you could make a good case for a number of different groups being the most dangerous. However, the designation changes depending on the designator's rhetorical goals, which makes the designation worthless. If we can all just agree that it's worthless, I'd like to see it turned into something a little more fun: Mexican officials and analysts could vote on the most dangerous gang on a weekly basis, a la espn.com's NFL Power Rankings (the Colts have to hit the top spot this week!). It could be a running segment at the end of the nightly news every Monday. Televisa, how about it?
