In an exceedingly amiable statement, AMLO agreed to Ebrard's proposal that the pair participate in two debates this October, followed by a national consultation in November to determine who is the presidential candidate in 2012. The friendly tone notwithstanding, the stumbling block of who gets to participate in the consultation --which is vitally important because Ebrard is more popular among the population at large, while AMLO is more popular among members of leftist parties-- has gone nowhere.
When the debates roll around, I will be fascinated to see how Ebrard approaches their differences. I hope he is aggressive in pointing out that no one can question his basic commitment to democracy, nor his commitment to social liberalism.
