Odd Lack of Support
This online poll from Grupo Imagen is striking: asked the question, "The Mexican government asked a federal court in the US to declare Arizona's Law SB1070 unconstitutional...do you think we have the right to do so?", 65 percent said no. I'm not sure if this is upper-class disdain for poorer immigrants (I hope not because that would be a rather ugly sentiment, but I also suspect not, because immigration and moreover Hispanic identity is hardly the exclusive province of the poor), or perhaps a twisted expression of nationalistic cautiousness (i.e. if we can challenge their laws, then they can challenge ours), but whatever the emotion or pattern of thought from which this springs, the result is unexpected.
