Dropping

According to the Mexican government's stats, drug-related murders in Mexico from January through March were down 26 percent from the last three months of 2008. The number also dropped by 16 percent from February to March. There were extremely large drops in cities like Culiacán, Juárez, and Tijuana, all of which had been among the hardest hit areas. But before we go and get too excited, it should be noted that even with the drop, their were 1,960 murders linked to organized crime in the first three months of 2009, a pace which would make this year significantly bloodier than last should it be maintained.

Patrick, I don't think you meant to use the word "execution." Assasinations? Hits? Drive-bys? Not sure. But not "execution," leastways in American English.

Yeah, maybe not, that would be the Spanish formulations. And now as I reread that, it sounds like I'm talking about government-executions of prisoners, or something along those lines, which is of course not what I am referring to. I actually kind of struggled with this, because none of the words seemed to capture what the government was saying. I didn't go with a assassinations because that usually has a political implication. I guess drug-related murders would be the closest translation.

Problem solved! And the post has been modified from its original form.
