The Mexican Church's role in public life is a prickly subject, and this will further push buttons: in its magazine Desde la Fe, the Catholic church slammed the teacher's union for its "monstrous bureaucracy", urged the SEP to push forward the Alliance for Quality in Education, and celebrated the work of Josefina Vázquez while she was at the head of the secretariat.
This also follows the recent intensification of the Church's comments in favor of the PAN. Most of said support seems pretty tame compared with the outright shilling you see by American clergy, and I think the capacity of the Church to change votes is grossly overestimated. Nonetheless, the direct support for an ongoing government initiative as well as a just-ousted cabinet member and deputy candidate seems to cross a new line.
