The participation in the Council confirms the responsibilities carried by the political gravity of the country, which must abandon its outdated prejudices to be effective in an international context. Our absence in peace-keeping operations without armed personnel must be corrected immediately. The participation over the next twenty months more in this organization will allow us to advocate for a reform of the organization that results in an increase of the Council. The community of nations demands the reactivation of development themes and the acceptance of new challenges like climate change or the fight against organized crime. It's hard to perceive one principal agenda item here upon which Mexico will be able to have a measurable impact (with the possible exception of organized crime), which leads you to ask why Calderón was so dead set on wining the term. The possibility that Mexico's greater role in the Security Council will lead to a more flexible position on peace-keeping is intriguing, but that seems an unlikely result in the near term.
