Lack of Trust
Felipe Calderón mentioned in his interview with Le Monde that it would be "stupid" for the government to negotiate a truce with drug cartels. (For what it's worth, "stupid" is a much stronger word in Spanish.) An Imagen poll asked Mexicans if they thought that past presidents had negotiated with the cartels, and 95 percent said yes, they had. I think we can all agree that among the 5 percent is a heavy contingent of officials from the de la Madrid, Salinas, Zedillo, and Fox years, so that result is suddenly even more overwhelming.
