Building toward a Candidacy

Regarding the race for the PAN nomination, Carlos Loret last week wrote that since it is a decentralized, open primary process, the candidates who go out and visit local committees and do a fair bit of glad-handing have a huge edge over those who try to win it on name and prestige alone (see Creel, Santiago v Calderón, Felipe in 2006). This favors aspirants who are not in the cabinet, namely Creel and Josefina Vázquez Mota. Also, Loret says that the one cabinet official who is beginning to demonstrate a powerful support network is Ernesto Cordero.
