Hindsight

The plane crash that killed 15 people, including Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mouriño, is turning into something of a scandal for the government, not because there was an attempt on his life and a subsequent cover-up, as many people erroneously believe, but because of the sheer carelessness. Today, Excelsior reports that the FAA had issued a warning in 2003 about design flaws in the Learjet 45. Nonetheless, in 2004, Mexico bought several of them. Given the warning and the incomplete training of the flight crew, the government's second man never should have been up in the plane.

The flight crew's incredible errors are impossible to explain. Wake turbulence is a very dangerous reality, following a 'heavy' in to an airport. According to the official reports, they were too close, going too fast, and closing even closer, then to hit violent air currents produced by wingtip vortices that spin violently. Wake turbulence flipped the airplane over, no way could any pilot recover from that low altitude. My guess is that wake turbulence will be studied very closely and maybe some greatly lengthened separations will result. Airbus is crowing that their monstrous A-380 produces a wake 'not worse than other heavies'. Yeah, right!! We'll see
