Fernández Menéndez Part 3

Here he compares Mexico's electoral system to the one that allowed for the two unlikely candidacies of McCain and Obama.
Obama and McCain conducted a fascinating campaign in a historic election. How great for them and for their country. We, with the electoral laws in force today, could never aspire to something similar.
This is unnecessarily pessimistic. Maybe a Mexican candidate wouldn't be able to walk the exact same path of improbability to a major party nomination (especially in regard to financing the campaign), but the gist of it --that each man overcame the powerful opposing interests in his party-- is certainly in Mexico. For proof, one need look no further than Felipe Calderón, who was famously not Vicente Fox's choice in 2005.
