Hangin' with Bill

Soon-to-be Commerce Secretary Bill Richardson met with new PRD boss Jesús Ortega yesterday in Mexico. I read over the summer in Proceso that Obama's connections to Mexico, limited though they were, existed through friends from Chicago who were close to AMLO. This was mildly distressing, given that Obama hasn't displayed a great deal of knowledge about Mexico and a lot of center-left people in the States instinctively incline toward AMLO and his movement because they (wrongly) think that it's the natural counterpart of the Democratic party in Mexico. Of course, Obama was too smart to hitch his Mexican horse to a anti-democratic populist radical with no formal position in the government, but it is nonetheless reassuring to see a cabinet member lending an implicit endorsement to his intra-party rival.
