Yesterday I wrote about the perils of the PRI being the front-runner so far ahead of the 2009 elections. Today, we have an example of senators in the PRD and the PAN teaming up to defeat a PRI-backed initiative: the death penalty.
To be sure, this is something of a unique issue, and the PAN-PRD nexus is in this case more a result of a deeply ingrained skepticism to capital punishment across the political spectrum rather than a conscious effort to shoot down the PRI. Nonetheless, the more the two parties team up, the easier it will be for them to do so in the future.
