Answer Me This

One misfire shouldn't ruin a man's (or a woman's) career, but why is David Mamet so highly thought of, what with his writing and directing Heist? I just watched the last half hour again, and it was every bit as bad as I remember it being when I rented it 2001. Not only is it my nomination for the worst movie of Gene Hackman's career; it is a dark horse for candidate for the worst movie of the 2000s starring A-list actors. How could the man responsible for Ronin have made such dreck?

I've always found him pretty hit or miss, but one thing is for sure - politically, he is, in the parlance of our times, a total douchebag:

I remember seeing that when it came out. One of the most self-indulgent pieces of trash I've ever read, both in its concept and its execution. Just count how many times "I" appears. I lost count at about 17,000. It gives you third-part embarrassment.

As far as the movies, the weird thing is that stylistically there isn't much of a common thread. Half of his movies are pretty understated in terms of dialogue and not too cliched in terms of plot, and then you have movies Heist, which seems like a composite of the worst parts of a million previous movies like it.
