Only in Brazil

El Universal has picked up the story of Silvio Roberto dos Santos, a Brazilian priest who spends his downtime searching for beauty queens. In fact, the former model and singer has a track record in the industry that spans five decades, and has helped young ladies from his neck of the woods --Votuparanga, a town of 77,000 some 300 miles from Sao Paulo-- win some of the country's biggest prizes, all while being an ordained priest since 1970.
To explain his well known vanity, which causes him to habitually use anti-wrinkle cream, apply laser treatment to facial blemishes, and die his hair, the priest rejects the idea that vanity is a sin: "I consider it an art. Every human being seeks beauty." After being asked to smile for a photo, the priest replied: "It's what I know how to do. I have no knowledge of what it is to suffer. Beauty is my happiness."
