Adios a Los Minis

The Mexican Supreme court has outlawed a practice whereby large parties shunted off a small quantity of votes to smaller parties. The vote rerouting kept mini-parties like PT, Nueva Alianza alive, so this ruling likely spells their end.

I'm of two minds about this: Mexico could do more to ensure the viability of non-traditional parties and candidates (see the derailed 2006 presidential candidacy of Jorge Castañeda for a good example), but the vote-passing practice is blatantly undemocratic, and the parties in question have a reputation for corruption. Furthermore, the effect on Mexico's political diversity will be limited, since the baby parties' impact on the political debate was negligible.
