Killings in Cancún

Yesterday, a general who'd been working in Cancun for 20 days was found tortured and killed along with his security detail. In his short time in the city, Mauro Tello had carried out a series of operations that led to arrests of members of the Zetas, as well as seizures of guns and drug precursors attributed to the same group.

El Universal offers a sketch of the resort town's historic importance to the drug trade (it's just a few hours by air from Bogotá), starting with the Juárez Cartel's arrival in the early 1990s under Rafael Aguilar, the Amado Carrillo years, the Mario Villanueva government, and the recent battles for control between Sinaloa and Gulf Cartel groups.
