Bad News
For the second time (at least) in the new year, Torreón earned national news coverage that it would prefer to avoid. Last night, an armed unit broke into the city jail, beat three prisoners to death, and set them on fire. The armed group then set eight prisoners free (or six; there are conflicting reports) and fled. The three men were part of a kidnapping group that was taken down with great fanfare after a gunfight in the parking lot of a trendy mall last month. The article linked above notes that the group was thought to have kidnapped and killed a prominent Monterrey businessman last year. That factoid is a bit of a non-sequitur, and therefore could be interpreted as a suggestion that last night's crime was revenge for the November crime.
