Protecting Elections

One of the more insightful policies of the Calderón drug policy team has been to concentrate federal police and military troops in states with upcoming elections. With resources limited, Calderón's team figured that removing the influence of drug money during the election process would pay dividends in the future, because the politicians elected would be less likely to owe favors to organized crime groups. As municipal elections approach in Torreón, the soldiers and federal police have been much more visible. (We can only hope they stay past the voting later this month). Excelsior provides a report on the army's pre-electoral presence in Guerrero here.
