We'll Be Back

A prediction from Coahuila Governor Humberto Moreira, fresh off of a forceful win in the statewide congressional elections in Sunday, graced the front page of today's El Universal: in 2012, the PRI will be back in Los Pinos. He denies it, but it's hard not to suspect that Moreira is holding out hopes that he's the nominee. He isn't often mentioned as a possibility and isn't too well known nationally, but he is successful, popular in his state and in his party, and has less baggage than many of the other possibilities.

Yup-- Maybe the PRI will gain the Presidency with some new blood. Humberto Moreira says good words, as they all do. However, Enrique Peña is a popular candidate, good looking and young. Whoever is president has massive challenges, so much so that it's difficult to understand how he could operate and not trample on the little bit of civil rights of citizens, a posture that very few leaders anywhere have managed to achieve. As always, 'we'll see, no?' And all across Latin America, much the same.

Yeah I think Peña has to be the favorite thus far, although a lot hinges on how his state's local elections go in March...
