Mexico has doubled the number of customs officers at ports-of-entry around the nation. Seven hundred officers whose contracts were not renewed are to be replaced by almost 1,500 new officers. The officers will be charged with searching for contraband at the dozens of ports of entry around the nation, presumably starting with the 31 along the northern border.
Update: Excélsior says that the number of fired agents is 1,400, which, if true, would mean the upgrade is only a matter of quality rather than quantity.
