Election Turned Reality Show

Via Richard, the AP had an ironic story this weekend about the fact that Mexico's leading presidential candidates are men whose significant other is a soap actress. It's not the most astute of insights in the history of time, but for what it's worth, Gancho was saying the same thing in November of 2008. And I repeat my belief that the best way to cover this campaign would be to turn it into a reality show, especially if Santiago Creel wins the PAN nomination.

Never thought about Creel making it a threesome - wow! - he's got some child now with a soap star, too.

Don't rule Creel out for the PAN nomination. Calderon is pissing off a lot of the wrong people - in and out of his party - and Creel is probably out for revenge after losing the 2006 nomination to the so-called "hijo disobediente." Most polls suggest he's the potential PAN candidate with the most name-recognition. Who else is out there? Ernesto Cordero?

Creel kind of looks like a reality star too, what with the three days of stubbble he's always sporting.

RE the nomination, I think he's got as good a chance as anyone. Cordero had a bubble once he was named economic minister, and as the Finance Secretary he also should benefit from the improved economic climate, but I don't know, he seems kind of late in coming to the big leagues. Lujambio doesn't seem likely. Vazquez Mota, maybe? Madero? No good bets to beat Peña Nieto. But of course a lot can change.

What are you hearing about Calderón pissing people off? Was it the shots at corporations for not paying enough in taxes last year?

Calderon had major issues with unhappy PAN Senators over the budget. They basically called him out on it for handing over too much to PRI governors.

The Espino wing of the party - not new enemies - also seems emboldened of late. The question is what comes after this year if the PAN losing streak continues in local elections? Calderon keeps having close allies run the PAN - and the results haven't been pretty.

Not sure if its "being pissed" at Calderon, but the church hierarchy also appears solidly in the Peña Nieto camp - and not especially popular with Los Pinos of late.

Interesting about the PAN Senators, I didn't realize that was causing a more long-term sort of breech.

If the PAN pulls off a bunch of surprising gubernatorial wins this year, I guess Nava could throw his hat in the ring too. But if they continue to lose, yeah it would be logical for most panistas to look in another direction.
