More Friendliness

I've mentioned on a few occasions the increased military cooperation between the US and Mexico. Another example: Air Force General Victor Renuart, head of the Northern Command, is in Mexico, talking with his counterparts about bilateral security issues related to drug trafficking and the Mérida Initiative.

I'd be very curious to know what you think about this article:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2009/07/we-bring-fear

Gutierrez Soto's story has received a good bit of attention, but the overwrought writing seriously detracts from the story's credibility, as do some of the details (Really, the bar in Palomas you're sitting in just happens to play "Knockin on Heaven's Door" followed by "God's Gonna Cut You Down?" Seriously?). And certainly there's no context provided, such as the broad support in Mexico - including in drug hotspots - for using the military to fight the gangs.

All that said, not living in northern Mexico, I have no idea the degree to which the Army really is regarded as just another menace to fear and avoid. Thoughts? The article may deserve a post of its own...

I agree with pretty much everything you said, especially about the lack of context. Yeah I think it does deserve a post of its own...
