As Ever, Peña Nieto in Front

A new poll from BGC has the Mexico state governor out in front of the rest of the PRI hopefuls for the presidency, both in terms of likability and public recognition. The poll (which, to my frustration, assigns a slightly arbitrary point value to their findings rather than just simple percentages) found that Peña Nieto's popularity rating had dipped from 7.4 to 6.8 since last October, which could be a product of the Paulette case, but could also just be a case of media saturation and people getting tired of the same face. Beatriz Paredes is second.

I think she could be too, actually, I like her as a dark-horse. A lot would have to shake out in her favor, but every now and then you have to remind yourself that there are two years left.

Oh good, I have her on my list of 14 possible presidential candidates. For a moment I was worried I'd have to add another one.

Yeah she'd be lower half of my top ten most likely, probably. ENP's the big question, if we can turn Mexico State over to a priista and avoid any big pitfalls, he's probably going to be tough to beat. But if he falters, which may come just from people getting tired of him too quickly and the endless repetition of his less flattering moments (especially Paulette and the swine flu), 14 may not be enough to have the ultimate winner in there.

Who else do you have? I'd go with Amlo, Ebrard, Navarrete, Ortega, ENP, Manlio, Beatriz, Fidel Herrera, Moreira (arriba Coahuila!!), Creel, Vazquez Mota, Lujambio, Cordero...that's 13, who else is on there?

Wow, our lists pretty much matched up. I didn't have Carlos Navarrete on my list and I probably should. Good call. Ok, make that 15.

I have two long shot candidacies of Margarita Zavala and Jorge Castañeda. While I don't think either will win or even run, my guess is that we'll see both names floated by the media in the coming year and generate a bit of controversy/excitement/gossip. I'm writing them on the list and then dismissing them as long shots so that when that when they get their 15 minutes (ok, 72 hours) of media buzz, I don't get called out for having missed it.

Wait, I also have Fernando Gómez Mont and Manuel Espino. I was missing Moreira and Lujambio. I guess our lists didn't match up quite as nicely. Are we up to 17 now?

I like Zavala, and I could see her being welcomed by the public down the line, but I don't know if she's interested. She seems like a more withdrawn sort of person, though maybe she's just respecting the traditions of the role and being conspicuously anti Marta Sahagun. I just saw someone else who I thought was worth inclusion too, like 20 minutes ago, and now I have no idea who it was. Dammit. Must have been all those shots to the head as a boy.

Now I remember, it was José Ángel Córdova, the health secretary.
