There have been a number of gun battles in Torreón over the past few weeks (including one in the middle of a shopping rush on Christmas Eve), but this was the first of those to garner so a lot of national attention. Part of that is the fact that seven federal police were injured on New Year's Day, but, in what is not unlike the patterns of news coverage in American cities, the previous lack of attention is also explained by the fact that the other fights were in poorer neighborhoods.
