Also, Vicente Fox bragged of having scheduled a meeting with Barack Obama to discuss immigration, and seemed to suggest that Calderón knew nothing about it. Fox discussed the meeting as though it were imminent, which suggests that it would predate any with Calderón. That would make such a reunion a horrible breach of etiquette from both Obama and Fox, who, we often must remind ourselves, is a member of Calderón's party. I have no way of knowing this, but I'm just guessing that Fox was exaggerating, and that the meeting won't occur before one with Calderón.

Dispatch from the Far Right
Manuel Espino wants to run for deputy in the July elections, pending a meeting with PAN chief Germán Martínez. Espino, himself an ex-PAN president who's been more of a thorn in Calderón's side than any member of the opposition, is an easy guy to dislike, but his presence should make the proceedings more interesting. I tend to think that both the extremist elements on the left and the right in Mexico are not, in the long term, of much use to their parties, since the Mexican electorate is generally more moderate than the political class, but the story in both the PAN and PRD has been about bringing the wing-nuts back into the fold.
