Death in Managua

Alexis Arguello, one of the most appealing boxers to ever lace up the gloves and the mayor of Managua, was found dead earlier today, with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was 57. Here's a video of him finishing off Rubén Olivares for his first title, at featherweight.

Sad. He had a strange evolution politically, one of the small class of anti-Sandinistas during the 80s (not sure he qualified as a contra per se) who ended up with Ortega after the 2006 election. That said, I read a profile somewhere during last year's (horribly executed and probably stolen) municipal elections that was very very sad, basically saying that he was clearly afflicted by dementia and noting that his FSLN handlers were finishing his sentences for him in response to most questions. I have no way to know just how much he believed in Ortega and how much he was exploited, but given Ortega's post-1990 career the latter is thoroughly, and disgustingly, plausible.

I'd not heard that, but that's awful. I remember seeing something about him at the De la Hoya Forbes fight in (I think) 2008, and no one mentioned dementia, but then I don't think boxing reporters go out of their way to bring that up about old legends. I heard a rumor that he'd wanted to resign in the days leading up to the shooting, actually on Sportscenter I think. A shame, whatever the story behind it really is.
