Excélsior reported earlier this week that almost 300 people were arrested for public urination at Carnival this year. This was not a throwaway detail in the above-linked story, but rather its reason for being. Don't ever accuse the Mexican media for being overly Mexico-focused.

Alterdestiny. Though unless I'm mistaken, he let that oh-so-important figure slip by him.
It would have been 301, but I played dumb gringo... hey, it was dark, and there was a line outside the port-a-potties, and besides... I was behind a pillar on the beach. And, a dumb gringo with a full bladder.
ReplyDeletehaha. That was actually a nice part of the article was that Americans didn't make up a huge part of the arrested. Watching this video made me worry that we were a nation of serial urinators.

I ended up talking about the crackdown in the first (pre-Carnaval) post, back when it was just in theory (rather than in practice) that pissing in public was an arrest-able crime.
ReplyDeleteAaaah missed that...hey in English is it usually Carnival or Carnaval? I had it as the latter in the post, like it is in Spanish, but then I thought I saw it as Carnival in a number of places in the English media.
